vivo has reportedly filed a new patent for a smartphone with a rollable screen that can extend vertically. Unlike most previous rollable phone concepts that expand the screen sideways, vivo’s patented design allows the display to be taller, rather than wider.
A different design compared to other rollable phones
Based on images in the patent document, the device has a screen that can be pulled out from the bottom or top of the phone’s body to extend the display. This approach differs from other rollable phone concepts that typically expand the display horizontally to create a wider screen like a small tablet.

The concept of rollable displays is actually not new in the technology industry. Several companies have previously shown off concepts for phones with rollable screens, but to date, no commercial models have been launched. Instead, rollable display technology has so far been seen more on laptops or prototype devices.
However, these patents only show design ideas and will not necessarily be actual products. Smartphone manufacturers typically file multiple patents to protect their technology, but many of them are never realised in commercial devices.
