According to Cloudflare’s CEO, the traffic from bots could surpass that of humans on the internet by 2027. That said, what should you know about it?

A worrying trend

For your information, Matthew Prince said in an interview at SXSW that the rapid growth of generative AI is causing bots to visit far more websites than humans. For example, a human might visit 5 sites to buy a camera, but an AI agent can visit up to 5000 sites to answer a single user query.

Before the era of generative AI, bots only accounted for 20% of traffic on the internet. This situation will become even more serious with the use of robots.txt by various sites to prevent content being picked up by AI from being ignored.

Last year, Wikipedia reported that 65% of the high traffic usage on their site was from bots stealing site data to train artificial intelligence (AI). Even more worrying is that this traffic usage is so unusual that only 35% of site visitors are bots. It puts a strain on web browsers to the point where regular users can’t access the site when they need to.
