Android tightens its restriction on sideloading – It is more difficult to sideload apps now

Android is now taking steps to balance platform openness with user security by introducing a developer verification system and the “Advanced Flow” feature for sideloading applications. That said, what should you know about it?

No more easy way or shortcuts

Previously, Android users could easily install apps outside the Play Store via APK files. However, this latest change requires all developers to have a verified identity, even if the app is distributed outside the Play Store.

Additionally, this measure aims to address the increasing cases of fraud that manipulate users into installing malicious applications. According to Google, cybercriminals often use pressure tactics such as phone calls or remote access to persuade victims to disable security features. The Global Anti-Scam Alliance 2025 report also revealed that 57% of consumers have been exposed to scams, with global losses reaching USD442 billion.

For experienced users who still want to install apps from unverified developers, Google introduced “Advanced Flow”. This process requires users to enable Developer Mode, verify that they are not being influenced by other parties, and go through a restart and re-verification process of the device. Additionally, there is a 24-hour waiting period before installation is allowed to reduce the risk of making hasty decisions.

After completing this process, users can choose to allow sideloading of apps for a certain period of time or permanently, but security warnings will still be displayed. At the same time, Google is also introducing limited distribution accounts for students and hobbyist developers, allowing apps to be shared with small groups without the need for full identity verification.

Furthermore, these changes are expected to be implemented starting in August, marking Google’s continued efforts to strengthen security without compromising Android users’ freedom.
