To address the impact of the global energy crisis, the Malaysian government is rolling out a new work-from-home policy for civil servants. According to a circular issued by the Public Service Department, eligible federal civil servants will be allowed to work remotely starting 15 April.

Who Is Eligible for Work From Home

The policy applies to civil servants stationed in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, and all state capitals, provided their one-way commute exceeds eight kilometres. The initiative is designed to reduce commuting needs and ease pressure caused by rising energy-related challenges linked to global developments.

The work-from-home arrangement does not apply to essential services. This includes personnel from the armed forces, police, fire and rescue services, prisons, immigration, and maritime enforcement. Healthcare workers and education officers involved in physical schooling are also excluded from the policy. Departments will determine which roles qualify based on operational needs.

Structured Implementation and Monitoring

The policy will be implemented in phases, with specific working days depending on each state’s weekend schedule. Civil servants are required to log attendance through the SPOT-Me system, which includes geolocation tracking. Department heads will also monitor productivity and attendance throughout the work-from-home period.

What This Means for Malaysia’s Workforce

The new policy signals a more flexible approach to public sector work arrangements, especially during periods of global uncertainty. For eligible civil servants, it offers reduced travel and improved work-life balance, while for the government, it serves as a practical step toward managing energy-related challenges without disrupting essential services.
