Apple makes 100 test units of its foldable iPhone after fixing the crease problem

Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone, often referred to as the iPhone Fold, has taken a major step in development. On 25 November 2025, reports stated that around 100 units were produced after a breakthrough that removes the screen crease usually seen on folding phones.

Based on current estimates, the device may cost about USD2400, which is roughly RM11500. These 100 units are part of the engineering validation testing stage. This is the phase where Apple tests early production units before approving mass production.

Crease-free display design

Folding phones normally show a visible crease on the inner display. Current information suggests that Apple has solved this issue. The panel is supplied by Samsung Display, but the structural design, lamination process and material choices are created by Apple. The hinge has also been reworked to reduce stress on the display when folding and unfolding.

This refinement is likely what allowed Apple to move ahead with pre-production. A dedicated production line has already been set up by Honghai Group, one of Apple’s key manufacturing partners.

What we currently know about the iPhone Fold

Based on recent reports and supply chain information, these are the expected features:

  • Inner display provided by Samsung Display, with Apple’s own design and lamination to prevent creasing
  • New hinge with improved materials for better durability
  • Around 100 engineering validation units have already been produced.
  • Rumoured 7.8-inch inner display and 5.5-inch outer display
  • Expected thickness of about 4.5 to 4.8 mm when unfolded, and around 9 to 9.5 mm when folded
  • Possible dual camera setup, and either a hole punch front camera or an under-screen camera
  • Side-mounted Touch ID is considered more likely than Face ID.
  • Battery capacity rumoured to be between 5400 mAh and 5800 mAh.

Expected release timeline and pricing

Analysts predict a price of about USD2400, which converts to roughly RM11500. If everything moves smoothly into mass production, the iPhone Fold may be released in 2026, possibly alongside the iPhone 18 series.

If you are in Malaysia and waiting for a foldable iPhone, be prepared for premium pricing similar to other top-tier foldable models.
