Today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has instructed telecommunications providers nationwide to closely monitor network performance during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri period. The move aims to ensure Malaysians continue to enjoy smooth and reliable connectivity as millions travel and communicate during the festive season.
866 Network Upgrades Rolled Out Nationwide
To prepare for the expected surge in usage, telcos have already implemented 866 temporary network enhancement initiatives since early March 2026. These efforts include:
- Network optimisation works to improve coverage quality and capacity
- Activation and modernisation of 5G infrastructure
- Deployment of temporary solutions such as Portable Base Transceiver Stations, Cellular on Wheels and Mobile Communication Vehicles
Together, these upgrades are designed to handle higher demand for calls, messaging, internet browsing and video communication during the festive period.
Focus on High-Traffic and Congestion Areas
The network improvements are targeted at locations expected to experience heavy data usage and congestion. These include major highways, rest and service areas, tourist hotspots and densely populated locations where large gatherings are expected during Hari Raya. MCMC has also indicated that it will conduct on-site monitoring at critical locations when necessary to ensure service quality is maintained.
Real-Time Monitoring and Rapid Response
All telcos have been directed to continuously monitor network performance and respond immediately to any service disruptions or degradation in quality. MCMC will act as a central coordinator, working with operators and deploying field monitoring teams to address issues in real time.
Public Advised to Report Network Issues
Users who experience connectivity problems are encouraged to contact their respective service providers or submit complaints through MCMC’s official channels for prompt resolution. The initiative highlights the importance of reliable digital infrastructure, especially during peak travel periods when communication plays a critical role in safety, coordination and staying connected with loved ones.
