Malaysian authorities are stepping up efforts to tackle misinformation related to fuel and electricity prices, investigating individuals responsible for spreading false content on social media platforms. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that investigations are ongoing to prevent unnecessary panic among the public.
Fake Fuel Price Hike Sparks Probe
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into five individuals suspected of circulating false information about petrol and diesel price increases. The misleading posts appeared on platforms such as Threads and reportedly incorporated visual elements from Buletin TV3 to make them seem authentic.
Three of the individuals have already been called in to give statements. The misinformation prompted widespread concern, despite official clarifications from the news outlet confirming that the content did not originate from them.

False Electricity Tariff Claims Also Under Scrutiny

Separately, MCMC is probing individuals for sharing fake news claiming electricity tariff hikes. These posts similarly misused official graphics and were widely circulated across social media channels, raising unnecessary fear and confusion among Malaysians. Authorities stress that even well-intentioned misinformation can create disruption and must be addressed swiftly.
Legal Framework and Penalties
Both cases fall under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which criminalises the misuse of network facilities to transmit false information. Offenders can face a fine of up to RM500000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both, reflecting the seriousness with which Malaysian authorities treat digital misinformation.
Public Reminder to Verify Information
Authorities urge Malaysians to verify information before sharing it online, particularly regarding public services or pricing. By exercising caution and relying on verified sources, the public can help curb the spread of false claims and protect community trust in digital platforms.
Social media users should remain vigilant, report suspicious posts, and avoid sharing unverified claims to minimize the impact of false information on the community. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
