Sarawak explores Grab “Sampan” Pilot program to digitalise river transport

The Sarawak government is evaluating a proposal from Grab Malaysia to launch a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) for electric-powered sampans on the Sarawak River. This initiative aims to modernise conventional river crossings by combining tradition with innovation.

The Proposal

Under the proposal, passengers will be able to book their river rides through an app, with pick-up and drop-off points mapped out along the Kuching waterfront. The system is expected to support cashless payments, making the service more seamless and in line with modern urban mobility.

The pilot is not just about convenience—it’s also a sustainability play. By using electric propulsion, the sampans reduce reliance on traditional fuel, helping to lower emissions. Furthermore, the project supports first- and last-mile connectivity, linking river transport with broader urban mobility.

According to the plan, the PoC will run for six months, featuring eight dedicated pick-up and drop-off points along the riverfront in Kuching. These stations are key to ensuring accessibility and reliability for local commuters and tourists alike.

Next Steps for the Government

Sarawak’s Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, highlighted how the pilot project “embraces innovation while honouring tradition.” He emphasised the importance of rivers to Sarawak’s cultural identity, noting that with 40 major river basins, waterways are deeply woven into the state’s heritage.

The Sarawak Transport Ministry and the Sarawak Rivers Board are now studying the feasibility and technical details of the pilot. Their evaluation will cover safety, sustainability, and how the service can be scaled if the trial succeeds.

Will It Work?

This initiative signals Sarawak’s push to digitally transform traditional transport modes. By integrating app-based booking and electric boats, the state could redefine river mobility—not just as a nod to tradition, but as a future-facing, smart-transport solution.

As mentioned, it will take half a year for this trial run to see if this plan works. Until then, we will have to wait and see. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
